WEST
DENNIS -- The opening day of the King of the Cape WindFest started with
sun and wind, with winds blowing around 15mph from the SE. The air was
quite cool but the sun kept everyone toasty. The Windfest exhibitors
completed setting up their tents and the demoers started to line up
to try out the latest and greatest gear of 2004. We had Bic Sports,
Gaastra, Fiberspar, Gun Sails, Angulo Boards, World Sails, Hot Sails
Maui, Arrows, North Sails, Sailworks, Starboard, Ezzy, Chinook, Hi Fly,
Exocet, Aerotech, and Real Wind on site. Over 120 demoers took the day
off to get an early start on the weekend and beat the weekend crowds.
There were many
activities on the beach including learn to windsurf clinics from Jace
Panebianco as well as Roger and Ellen's Taste of Windsurfing Tour. A
few sailors took advantage of these free clinics, but most were getting
warmed up on the water for the next days competition. Sailors from Bonaire,
Europe, Asia, and all over the US came to the event to compete. As they
started to get ready for the competition you could see that it was going
to be a tight race with most of the skill levels at an even higher level
than previous years. There were moves going off during the practice
day that left most spectators a gag.
Pro Sailors that
registered this year include:
Nick Warmuth
Riley Coon
Jamey Clarke
Tyson Poor
Jace Panebianco
Wyatt Miller
Tati Frans
Dioni Guadagnino
Kiri Thode
Whit Poor
Brett Green
When all was said
and done, we had 55 competitors registered for this year, with almost
third of them in the junior class.
Once registration
had completed for the day everyone headed off to Chatham Iso Bar for
drinks and windsurfing video party, courtesy of RRD/Sideshore Media/Jace
Panebianco. Fun was had by all and much anticipation for the following
days competition could be felt.
